04/06 My letter of gratitude to the editor at McSweeney's Internet Tendency Dear Ed Page, Thank you for your quick reply and your acceptance of this very important and personal missive to my pet bird. I hope that my experience can be of help to others in some way. I will look forward to seeing my open letter in Timothy McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, a haven of fun in cyberspace where I have whiled away many happy hours. Finally, I feel that my life has taken on new meaning because my words will be, in however small a way, a part of the greatness of McSweeney’s in one of its many forms. From now on I will greet each new day with rejoicing instead of paranoia and despair. The bad times are over. Thank you for that, McSweeney’s and Mr. Ed Page. As Ever, Renee Prince
11/05 REJECTION LETTER FROM HOURGLASS BOOKS Dear Ms. Prince, Thank you for the opportunity to read your remarkable story, "A Pilgrim Goes to Mars", and to consider it for our upcoming anthology Peculiar Pilgrims--Stories from the Left Hand of God. You should be pleased to know that your story was a finalist?no mean accomplishment, considering the hundreds of entries we received! This is indeed something, in itself, to celebrate. The challenge has been that we have had so many strong submissions--it is frustrating to get so many and know we cannot possibly use them all. As you can imagine, a theme like the one we've chosen for this anthology leaves the possibilities open to a number of types of stories. Sometimes the majority of styles received gives the final collection its true shape, and determines which types of stories go best together. While we all loved the story itself, our editorial team felt it did not fit as well with some of the more dominant themes that emerged. This says nothing at all about the quality of the piece. I think, on the contrary, that the fact that (1) it was a finalist out of all those hundreds received, as well as the fact that (2) we held onto it for so long is a testament to its strengths! Thanks again for waiting so patiently. No one was eager to let it go, and we all wish you the best of luck with your future publications and encourage you to keep writing (and publishing!)! Warmly, Linda Wendling Hourglass Books
09/05 Rejection Letter from Barrelhouse Renee --
Thanks for sending this to us. There are a lot of things I really like about this piece, but I'm not sure it's an exact fit for Barrelhouse. I wish you the best of luck in finding it a suitable home; I wouldn't be at all surprised if another editor snatched it up. And I hope you'll keep us in mind when you have other works to shop around.
All the best,
Mike Ingram One-Fourth of Team Barrelhouse
